The stories of the station - a project update

February 12, 2024

Glossop Creates’ latest Pairings residency - which has partnered artist Evie O’Connor with Glossop Train Station - is delving into the town’s history to uncover and unearth overlooked stories.

The Pairings artist residency programme enables local artists to carry out deeper research that helps to celebrate Glossop’s distinctive characteristics, heritage and communities.

In Autumn 2023, Evie started her project with Glossop Train Station with a creative journey to discover the rich, historical stories of the building itself, and the people who have passed across its platforms over the years, shaping the town’s history.  Evie plans to use these stories to shape a number of paintings that will be available to view in the station waiting room.

For the research stage of the project, Evie has been working with the Heritage Centre archive to draw inspiration for her work and unearth these overlooked histories. Her work is focusing on people’s history, specifically how people choose to spend the time they call their own to experience leisure, relaxation, celebration and connection.

She has also kindly been granted access to the rich archive of photographs, objects and memorabilia archive at Glossop Old Band Room. The Band Room serves as a prime example of a thriving community space and will be the focus of one of Evie’s paintings.

The paintings will aim to convey a sense of community and place by focussing on daily rituals, social activities, and the many ways people come together that may be taken for granted but contribute to a thriving community.

Through highlighting areas of Glossop’s past and present, her intention is to  document spaces that nurture the community, foster a sense of identity and add to the overall wellbeing of its people.

As part of the pairings project, Evie has also been utilising the free library stock suggestion to expand and diversify its selection of art books, a service she encourages people to use by visiting Derbyshire County Council’s library catalogue online.

Later this month, Evie will be running art workshops at St Philip Howard School,  where students will be responding to the work of Folk and Outsider artists.

Evie’s new body of work will be displayed in March 2024 in the waiting room of Glossop Train Station.   Thanks to the Friends of Glossop Station, who have made this project possible through funding received via the Community Rail Network Fund.
