JOLLITY - A NEW FINE ART EXHIBITION BY GREG WILLIAMSON

May 7, 2024

As part of Derbyshire Open Arts, local artist Greg Williamson is exhibiting at The Craft Barn in Hadfield. Well known for his incredibly colourful depictions of local wildlife and animals, Greg goes by the name Sharkman Art. We caught up with him to find out more…

“Forming part of a wider series of exhibitions in and around Glossop, there will be 52 of my original paintings on display - and for sale - at The Craft Barn from 25th - 27th May. The exhibition features some of my bigger statement pieces and also some of my unique work on heated metal. I have called the exhibition “Jollity”.

“The name Jollity is meant to reflect the fun and playful nature of the exhibition! As a child I was taught art by Dave Moss, aka Dr Jelly. He played in a band called the Dr Jelly Band and they covered a song called ‘Jollity Farm’ by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band. “There’s a town called misery, but of that we’ll have none.”  Dave (now in his 80s, but still handsome as ever) not only taught me about art but about the importance of fun! This exhibition is really a tribute to him and his positive outlook on life.

Artistic style and inspiration

“My artistic style can be likened to confetti - a vibrant, chaotic and exuberant spectacle. Utilising watercolour, ink, rust and spray as my primary mediums. I infuse texture into my pieces by incorporating floral and plant prints, as well as stencils. My work aims to honour and explore the rich variety of wildlife found in Derbyshire while also bringing joy to the viewer. I enjoy the physical act of painting over creating digital art.

“Glossop and Manchester really inspire my work. Glossop is surrounded by breathtaking countryside and teems with magnificent wildlife. Meanwhile, Manchester boasts a thriving and dynamic art scene, featuring exceptional street art. I embarked on creating ‘Rural Urban Art’ that blends urban flair with rural themes. I have recently painted a 20m x 3m mural at Crossgate Farm Campsite in Tintwistle. It’s well worth a visit.

“The Craft Barn has provided me with a space to display my work and share it with others. I think sharing work digitally online is OK, but seeing the physical work is a completely different and hopefully inspiring experience. There isn’t really anywhere else to exhibit in the area. I was very saddened to hear that The Craft Barn will be closing its doors for the last time following my exhibition. It is a great loss to the town and future young artists of the town.  The owner Julia is a legend.

Derbyshire Open Arts

“Derbyshire Open Arts is the perfect excuse to explore this beautiful county, visit inspiring workspaces, talk to artists and have the opportunity to buy an original piece of art.

“The 18th annual event will showcase 200 artists at 61 venues across Derbyshire. It is taking place over the Whit Bank holiday weekend, 25th - 27th May 2024. In the Glossop area there are 16 artists at three venues; Victoria Hall and KIN.DER in Glossop and The Craft Barn in Hadfield. At these venues you can see a vast array of original artwork including:  painting and drawing, sculpture, glass making, printing, textiles, and ceramics. Derbyshire Open Arts is an ‘open studio’ style event and all venues are free to visit. Artists will open their own studios or group together in village halls to display the best of their talents.”

The Jollity exhibition will take place at The Craft Barn, 103a Station Road, Hadfield, from 25th - 27th May.  For full details of Derbyshire Open Arts,  visit www.derbyshireopenarts.co.uk where you can download a brochure, view the map and create your own personalised trail.  There are suggested routes and details about all the artists taking part.  You can pick up a physical brochure in libraries, cafes & schools and find out more on social media.
