History
The Partington Players – Glossop’s only live theatre - was established in 1954 as Glossop Repertory Company. In 1957, it moved to the present address which was skilfully converted into a charming and intimate venue of 120 seats.
The Partington Theatre was formerly Glossop Liberal Club and built by the Partington Family in 1916. The building sits on the corner of Norfolk Square on Henry Street.
There is a Blue Plaque for Mary Alice Partington on the side of the building in the square. The plaque commemorates Mary’s contribution to the civic life of the town. She became Mayor after the unexpected death of her husband, Herbert Partington, in 1916. She was the first woman Mayor of Glossop, and - as far as we are aware - only the third woman Mayor in England.
Events and productions
The Theatre presents a week-long run of six plays each season. Over the years, it has presented a vast range of plays embracing a great variety of theatrical styles; comedy, farce, tragedy, classical, modern and avant-garde. In many cases, Partington has presented amateur premieres of recently released modern plays such as Lee Hall’s version of ‘A Servant to Two Masters’, Martin McDonagh’s ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ and Marc Camoletti’s ‘Just Desserts’. It is currently playing to capacity audiences and receiving critical acclaim – with some of its Players going on to work in the professional sphere.
The Theatre bar is open to the public and regularly hosts musical events, quiz nights and more. It is also available for public hire.
