Jean’s Beans is one of the most recent independent additions to Glossop’s food and drink scene. The gorgeous little cafe and coffee shop nestles in a beautiful old building on Henry Street, and is absolutely delightful inside and out.
We caught up with business owner, Vicky Smith, to find out more…
Tell us about your business!
“Our family-owned business is nestled in the heart of Glossop, and we're immensely proud of our building's rich local heritage. We specialise in serving an array of delightful treats, including coffee, cakes, waffles, ice cream, and more. Every day, we have the pleasure of welcoming both new and returning customers, and nothing brings us more joy than seeing familiar faces walk through our doors.
“For us, customer service is absolutely paramount. We strive to build genuine connections with each person who visits us, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere where everyone feels like part of our extended family. We're committed to providing not just delicious food and drinks, but also memorable experiences that keep people coming back time and time again.
How do you feel about Glossop’s creative & cultural offering?
“Glossop’s creative and cultural offerings are intriguing! I appreciate the diversity and vitality that such offerings can bring to a community. Cultural richness often fosters a sense of belonging, stimulates innovation, and enhances the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Whether it's through art, music, literature, or other forms of expression, vibrant cultural scenes like Glossop's can inspire creativity and create opportunities for connection and exploration”
How does the town’s heritage and culture reflect within your business?
“Preserving the original state of our building is important to us as it allows us to honour Glossop's heritage and contribute to the town's cultural landscape. By maintaining this historical structure, we not only preserved its physical form but also retained a tangible connection to the past for future generations to appreciate. Our commitment to preservation enhances the character and charm of our business, creating a unique atmosphere that reflects Glossop's history and adds to its cultural appeal. We believe that customers appreciate the authenticity and sense of nostalgia that comes with visiting a well-preserved historical building. Moreover, preserving the original state of our building can have economic benefits, as historical architecture can be a draw for tourists and contribute to the overall attractiveness of the area for residents and visitors alike.”
What would you like to see in Glossop (and its surrounding villages) that will help to bolster the town’s cultural and creative community?
“As a member of the Glossop community, I envision several initiatives that could enhance our town's cultural and creative community. We could create dedicated spaces where artists, performers, and creatives can come together to collaborate, share ideas, and showcase their work. I would love to see more public art installations throughout Glossop and its surrounding villages to enrich our visual landscape and spark conversations about art and creativity. Lastly, collaborating with educational institutions to facilitate artist residencies, mentorship programs, and joint projects would help bridge academia with our local creative community and support emerging talent.”
What are your three favourite venues/ventures and services in the town?
“I love Glossop Market, where I can find fresh produce, unique crafts, and a variety of other goods from local vendors.
“With its swimming pool, gymnasium, sports courts, and fitness classes, Glossop Leisure Centre offers everything you need for a good workout and recreation.
“Finally, a little further afield but the Pavilion Arts Centre in Buxton is a fantastic cultural hub where to enjoy live performances, film screenings, and art exhibitions. It's a great place to immerse yourself in the arts scene and connect with the wider creative community in the High Peak.
“These venues and services contribute significantly to the liveliness and appeal of Glossop and around, providing opportunities for recreation, cultural enrichment, and community interaction.”
