In our first “cuppa with” of Spring/Summer, we chatted to Joanne Pearce from Her Handmade Hustle - a business that supports creative female entrepreneurs.
Tell us about your business or creative venture…
“Her Handmade Hustle provides step by step small business support for crafters, artists and makers of all kinds who are ready to start or grow a creative business doing something they love. I’m an entrepreneur myself and grew my own handmade stationery business from the ground up 15 years ago and I often wished I had someone to hold my hand as I was doing it! I truly understand the challenges of growing a creative business and how overwhelming it can feel doing it alone so I decided to set up Her Handmade Hustle to help fellow creatives wanting to turn their hobby into an income too. I offer clear advice and warm support on all aspects of starting or growing a creative venture, with a focus on increasing the confidence and knowledge of all the women I work with. I have a popular podcast too full of info and tips for all creatives embarking on a journey of self employment!
“I was also crowned one of the UK’s most impressive female entrepreneurs by Small Business Britain’s ‘Also100’ campaign which recognises 100 inspirational female entrepreneurs from across the country to celebrate the multi-achievements of women running businesses in the UK today."
How do you feel about Glossop’s creative and cultural offering?
“Glossop is home to some wildly creative people and we are lucky to have them on our doorstep! It's a town bursting with talent and independent spirit and we have a real mix of people and businesses doing exciting things. As someone who supports creatives in building their own businesses, I feel incredibly lucky to be based in Glossop. There’s a genuine sense of creativity woven into the fabric of the town - from local makers and musicians to pop-up events and workshops. It’s the kind of place that quietly nurtures big ideas and that’s what I love about it.”
How does the town’s heritage and culture reflect within your business or creative service?
“My mentoring business is rooted in the same values that shaped Glossop - resilience, resourcefulness and a strong sense of community. I work with creative women who are building their own businesses, often inspired by traditional crafts and skills passed down through generations. It feels like the perfect place to support others in turning their creativity into something sustainable and meaningful.”
What would you like to see in Glossop (and its surrounding villages) that will help to bolster the town’s cultural and creative community?
“Through Her Handmade Hustle, I work with creative women who are building businesses from their kitchen tables - often feeling isolated or unsure of where to start. I’d love to see more inclusive, welcoming spaces in Glossop where people can go to work on their business with the support of a creative community around them. For many of the women I work with, their business isn’t just a hobby - it’s their passion, their purpose and a way to create a better life for themselves and their families so a dedicated place to grow, connect and feel seen would make a world of difference. “
What are your three favourite venues/ventures and services in the town?
“I’m obviously a massive fan of Glossop Creates for championing local talent and offering support and exposure for local artists and makers - it’s a huge help for people to get noticed! I also love the Partington Players Theatre - I’ve got a real soft spot for old buildings stooped in history - and this place is a true community gem as well as a big part of the town’s creative landscape. And Glossop Craft Centre! When I started my stationery business 15 years ago, I got all my supplies from local shops where I lived at the time so I’m a huge fan of Glossop Craft Centre for keeping handmade traditions alive.”
Joanne will be popping up at Pico Lounge in Glossop on Tuesday 10th June, 12-2pm with her travelling ‘Creative Biz Start Up Stand’ where she will be offering free creative business advice to makers of all kinds. The pop up will be on a drop in basis so no appointment is needed. To find out more about Joanne’s business, visit www.herhandmadehustle.co.uk
