A cuppa with…Martha Camarillo from Eagle Centric

This week, we chatted to the creative force of nature that is Martha Camarillo!  As well as running her creative consultancy, Eagle Centric, Martha is a visionary who recently led the now legendary Glossop Creates “wander” walk centred on Dame Vivienne Westwood and her cultural legacy.

Martha hails from sunny Mexico and has settled in Glossop with her artist husband - a town which suits her creative outlook and love of community!

Tell us about your business or creative venture / project

“As a curious hybrid with a background in the film industry, advertising and the cultural arena, being creative is part of who I am. With that in mind I decided to call my creative consultancy project Eagle Centric, a wordplay that replaces ‘ego’ for something symbolically higher and deeper. The Cambridge Dictionary defines ego as “the idea or opinion that you have of yourself, especially the level of your ability and intelligence, and your importance as a person.” An eagle stands for exceptional eyesight, honesty, truth, strength, courage, wisdom, transcendence, willpower and freedom, that’s why I’m taking inspiration from these attributes, to take ideas and projects onto the next level.

“My background in multidisciplinary creative fields - mainly as an art director and a set decorator - has broadened my way of looking at everything. Now I want to use my eclectic background to provide aesthetic and artistic advice for projects that are either brand new or in need of enhancement. Through my personal vision I want to help busy people who don’t have the time to make their best decisions, either for personal or professional purposes.”

How do you feel about Glossop’s creative and cultural offering?

“As a relative newcomer, I have witnessed the quick boost to our picturesque town with the arrival of Glossop Creates and KIN.DER, both of which promote creativity and develop our sense of place and belonging through a diverse range of events and activities. The fact that Steven Dexter and Charlie Collins offer drop-in sessions at the library once a month, among many other projects, is a great opportunity to share and exchange potential ideas that are enriching the community. Richard Knox and Lauren Riley from KIN.DER are good examples of how to start and grow a creative business in record time, as well as all the interesting side projects they offer.”

How does the town’s heritage and culture reflect within your business or creative service?

“Living here is such a privilege. The innate and picturesque richness of this town is a permanent source of inspiration on the one hand; on the other one people are exceptionally kind and hospitable; I’ve found amazing and supportive friends I would never have expected, and they have unconditionally helped me to build up a way to earn my place here, like Sonja Quirk and Clare Isherwood of Glossop Arts Project; the bright engineer Karolina Brown; the talented Stella Corrall, who owns Lucentia Design; Jo Mohan, Holdan’s Limited pro graphic designer, and of course Edward Molloy, my beloved husband and clever fine artist. All of them are gorgeous human beings! A few other names I wouldn’t like to exclude but they are alive in my grateful memory. I enjoyed it so much when Glossop Creates commissioned me for the Wander Walk, Too Inspired to Be Tired. The outcome was so positive and paying homage to Dame Vivienne Westwood for her universal and timeless legacy was a true honour.

“In fact, I think that’s part of my current mission, to gain the trust of potential customers that would like to treat themselves with original creative guidance to improve anything they want. I’m specifically referring to a wide spectrum that goes from not knowing what to give to a friend or a collaborator for a specific event or celebration, how to properly dress for a specific occasion, how to surprise your significant other with a nice detail, how to improve your personal look if you don’t feel comfortable, how to find a meaningful object to your home… I’m at my best when I see a smile on people’s faces after delivering successful results!”

What would you like to see in Glossop (and its surrounding villages) that will help to bolster the town’s cultural and creative community?

“So far the progress is evident and the outcome has shown impressive results with the current initiatives running, I think more resources and investment are needed to bring more life to the High Street with quirky shops, I like to imagine how ideal can be for local artists of all fields and backgrounds to have access to an individual space to work and display in a more affordable way to make their living in the best possible way.

“The fact that Dame Vivienne Westwood doesn’t have a museum here is something to consider in the near future, can you imagine how positive it would be for the new generations to learn from her legacy and admire her work? Locally and internationally speaking. A Glossop site museum as well would be great to have for locals and visitors.”

What are your three favourite venues/ventures and services in the town?

“Only three? That’s difficul!. I hope you don’t mind my selection!”
