Derbyshire Open Arts - Glass, Wool & Wood

May 31, 2023

Derbyshire Open Arts is running from 27th - 29th May. Although most of the exhibits will be taking place at Victoria Hall and KIN.DER, three artists will be exhibiting at Glass, Wool & Wood on Cliffe Road, Glossop.

Find out about the creatives and their practices here…

Linda Moss

Linda is a weaver who creates stunning hand woven textiles. She says: ”My weaving covers the full spectrum from plain weave in handspun wools on a portable rigid heddle loom, to complex patterns in fine silks on a floor-standing 8-shaft loom.

“Living on a hillside smallholding, I am surrounded by moorland landscapes where colours and textures constantly change with the seasons and the weather.  Not only does the local landscape influence my colours and texture choices, it provides them. The Shetland and Icelandic sheep in our field provide most of my wool, often in their natural colours which vary from warm white, through greys and honey shades to natural black (a deep bitter-chocolate brown). We also have a dye garden, which produces many ancient and native plants for dyeing the wool in subtle colours not achievable with chemical dyes.”

Colin Mail - Woodturning

Also exhibiting at Wool, Wood & Glass is Colin Mail who makes beautiful, bespoke pieces from wood.

He says: “Much of the wood that I use is from native hardwoods such as yew, ash, beech, oak and birch; I use some tropical wood which has been given to me by retired woodturners. The native woods are often rescued from discarded prunings or come from my own trees and have been seasoned. I believe in sustainability and will repurpose and recycle suitable wood. When I turn wood I try to optimise the attractiveness of its grain and potential features.”

Kay Stowell - Fused Glass

Having over fifteen years experience, Kay utilises various warmglass skills and coldworking techniques when creating her work. Kay takes inspiration from the local landscapes and environment, to create a body of work which showcases the reflective and transparent beauty of glass. From quirky animals, landscape wall panels to coasters, Kay aims to create beautiful art whilst making the owner smile.

“Working with Glass brings me great pleasure and joy. Glass is my passion and my life”, says Kay.

Glass, Wool & Wood is located at 6 Cliffe Road. Refreshments will be available at the venue.
