Glossop is celebrating its local creative talent with an outdoor art exhibition and trail for autumn - and it’s completely free to enjoy!
The town, which boasts rolling hills and jaw dropping views of the Dark Peak, is only 30 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly by direct train. The town is well known for its creative talent, with both Dame Vivienne Westwood and Dame Hilary Mantel hailing from its villages.
The outdoor art exhibition and trail, commissioned by Visit Peak District & Derbyshire and funded by High Peak Borough Council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund project, takes the form of an autumnal walking exhibition, showcasing the diverse range of creative talent in the town from painting and sculpture to music and street murals, as well as Glossop’s unique cultural identity.
The "End of the Line" Outdoor art exhibition and trail- which will run from 20th - 29th September - has been devised by Glossop Creates.
The art trail starts at Glossop train station and leads participants around the town centre where they can view a range of artworks by locally based artists. The name ‘End of the Line’ is inspired by the fact that Glossop is the terminus of the train line from Manchester - a local feature which was highlighted in The League of Gentlemen’s opening introduction sequence, when the cult comedy show was filmed locally in Hadfield from 1999 - 2017.
HIGH PEAK WALKING & CYCLING FESTIVAL
The art trail forms part of the wider High Peak Walking & Cycling Festival, in which many of the High Peak’s most scenic walking and cycling routes, charming towns and villages - and unique cultural assets - will be showcased and celebrated.
The festival will include a mix of online and in-person events, activities and experiences across the High Peak in a celebration of the great outdoors. It aims to raise the profile of the High Peak as a quality destination for walking and cycling, grow the local visitor economy and promote the area’s unique outdoor offer – whilst also shining the spotlight on the area’s vibrant cultural identity through The End of the Line outdoor exhibition in Glossop.
CREATIVE TALENT
End of the Line takes in Glossop train station, plus much of the high street and surrounding roads, with paintings, sculptures, textiles, prints, photography, sound and street art all featured and displayed at various locations.
Local artists taking part include internationally renowned painter Ghislaine Howard, who’s currently exhibiting at the Contemporary Six gallery in Manchester, and street mural and graffiti artist Deggy, who is well known for his Vivienne Westwood mural in Glossop and Sarah Harding memorial mural in Stockport. It also features sculptures by Brian Fell, paintings by visual artist Evie O’Connor, and soundscapes by podcaster and sound artist Clare Savory, plus many more.
To add to the excitement, there will be a busking point in the central Norfolk Square to promote local musicians, and a culinary element and cultural experience; the chefs at celebrated local deli and restaurant Two Hares have been commissioned to create a Glossop Pie which will reflect the town’s local heritage.
Steven Dexter from Glossop Creates said: We are grateful to Visit Peak District & Derbyshire and High Peak Borough Council for giving us the opportunity to test new creative ideas locally and to allow us to develop a fantastic new way of displaying creative talent along our High Street. The End of the Line showcases some of Glossop’s most established artists, artisans and projects, as well as creating new performance spaces and showing artwork in new places. There are big plans for Glossop, and we encourage those interested in the town as a creative destination to get in touch; a big part of what we do is advocating for Glossop as an amazing place to live, work and visit!”
Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure at the Council, said: “We’re delighted to support this event. Glossop is the perfect venue for an exhibition of this nature – the town is already gaining a great reputation for its creative and cultural vibe and events like this just help to reinforce that and attract more people to the town. I hope everyone who visits has a great time and comes back to visit us time and time again.”
