New Wander Walk treads the ancient mycelial pathways around Glossop

November 2, 2023

Glossop Creates is working with artist and writer Michelle Collier and George Street Community Bookshop to produce another fantastic Wander Walk this weekend - and this time, it’s inspired by…mushrooms!

On Saturday 4th November, Michelle will be leading the “March of the Mycelium” walk which will tread ancient mycelial pathways around Glossop. The route is based on a crowd-sourced mushroom spotters map created by visitors to the bookshop, and via Facebook.

The Wander Walk has been made possible by the wonderful, independent George Street Community Bookshop, where Michelle is conducting another fascinating artist residency.

Michelle says: “Along the way, we’ll harness the spirit of the mycorrhizal network - branching out in search of ‘nutrients’ that we can turn into the ‘fruiting bodies’ of our human bookshop network. We will be sketching what we can see through the eyes of the mushrooms, capturing written impressions as we sense the spaces around us and taking photos that we will later turn into cyanotype artworks.

“We won't be foraging for food - but for creative inspiration! Inspired by the idea of mycelial pathways, we'll be inhabiting the spirit of the mushroom - following their routes and exploring their habitats.  Along the way, we’ll be taking in the Glossop landscape and using this as inspiration to creatively document our walk.  If you’re joining and you do have knowledge about local fungi, flora or fauna – we enthusiastically encourage you to share your knowledge with the group!”

This event is part of MYCOMYTHOPOEIA – an artist residency at George Street Community Bookshop.  Throughout November, writer and artist Michelle will be inviting the local community to explore the bookshop, and Glossop, through the lens of mushrooms and mycelium – where stories, ideas and knowledge are what nourishes the bookshop network, and nd where the ‘fruiting bodies’ are our collective creative outputs.
