The Black Circle - a new events collective for Glossop

February 7, 2024

A new events collective in Glossop is holding a sold-out event on 10th February at The Globe.  The Black Circle is formed of seven locals who want to bring interesting and experimental music and art to the Glossop area, and the collective is already planning more events for the future.

That first event will feature a preview screening of a short film telling a twisted tale of pitch black comic vengeance titled Revenger, followed by a Q&A session with its Glossop-based director, Owain Paciuszko. There will be music from Sulk Rooms, the pseudonym of Yorkshire composer Thomas Ragsdale, and from the cinematic ambient drone three piece A-Sun Amissa, who will be marking the release of their new album, Ruins Era, with their performance.

Paciuszko and A-Sun Amissa members Richard Knox and Luke Bhatia are three of the organisers involved in the event, and alongside the rest of the group are looking to both bring national (and even international) artists to Glossop in the future, as well as supporting homegrown, local talent.

“It’s really exciting to have the premiere of Revenger taking place in the very town it was made in,” says Owain. “In one of the very locations it was filmed in no less! I hope the film will encourage others to start exploring the creative opportunities for movie-making on their doorstep, helping people realise you don’t need a Hollywood budget to tell a good story and have fun doing so.”

Knox, through his work at print shop KIN.DER - located in Glossop Gasworks - was conscious of the creative community in Glossop potentially being underserved by local events that catered towards the more avant-garde and alternative side of music. As a long-time musician with a new album on the horizon, The Black Circle’s first event gave him the perfect opportunity to combine the two things.

“I’ve been thinking about putting on shows that are a bit different in Glossop since I moved here almost 10 years ago. Now feels like the right time with the right people involved and it’s also a nice opportunity to celebrate our new record in our hometown.  We hope there are enough people in Glossop and the surrounding areas to make this sustainable in the long-term. Even if people haven’t heard of the artists we book, we hope to establish ourselves as an organisation people trust to discover new and interesting music and art.

The second event will take place at The Peer Hat in Manchester and will be headlined by experimental black metal band Wren, although the collective are adamant that Glossop will remain their home base for the majority of their events. “Just as we want to be unrestrained by genre boundaries, we want to be free to find the right setting for each and every event. We’re surrounded by incredible venues from churches to caves, and similarly we have a vast array of exciting and innovative artists that we’d love to champion through the events we put on.” says Becky Laverty, another member of the collective.

The Black Circle has plans in the works for future events already; if you weren’t able to snap up a ticket to the first event you can keep track of what comes next - as well as accessing playlists, a newsletter, socials and more - at https://linktr.ee/theblackcircle Alternatively, find them on Instagram at @beholdtheblackcircle
